About the Neighborhood

The 180th Street Business Improvement District (BID) is located in the heart of South Jamaica adjacent to the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Railroad. The district is located within the South Jamaica Empire Zone and is one of the few designated industrial sections in New York City. The array of large scale businesses the area is home to include a window manufacturer, a storage company, an awning manufacturer, a bus company and a building supply firm. The BID is also home to the New York Automotive a Diesel Institute, a certified automotive school which has trained over 850 students to become full service mechanics. The industrial district is surrounded by a thriving residential community represented by the Addisleigh Park Civic Association and the Brinkerhoff Action Association.

Jamaica Residents

Jamaica has a large and diverse population of over 200,000 residents making it the largest neighborhood in Queens. According to the 2000 census report Jamaica is 58.2% African American, 17.1% Hispanic, 14.9% White, 10.5% Asian and 9.4% other. The median income is $39,553. The demographics of the area are expected to change with the results of the new census.
